Things to Do
1
Etar Ethnographic Open-Air Museum
One of Bulgaria's most beloved museums — a living, breathing village frozen in the 19th century. Craftsmen work in traditional workshops, there are small shops selling handmade goods and food, and the setting along a mill-stream is picture-perfect. Allow 2–3 hours. Don't miss the buffalo yoghurt with honey from the little restaurant.
2
House of Humour & Satire
Gabrovo is famous across Bulgaria for its self-deprecating humour, and this quirky museum is its home. Four floors of satirical art, caricatures, interactive exhibits and contemporary installations. A mirrored labyrinth and a seed-bomb workshop make it great for all ages. Highly unique — there's nowhere else quite like it.
3
Колелото Park (The Wheel)
A beloved local park — ideal for a quiet walk, picnic or just sitting under the shade of mature trees. A lovely escape from the city bustle and great for a morning stroll. Open 24 hours and completely free.
4
Central Park (Градинката с Мечето)
A charming city-centre park dotted with sculptures and a monument to Vasil Levski — Bulgaria's national revolutionary hero. Perfect for an evening walk. The small lake (currently empty) is surrounded by lovely greenery. Locals love it for a calm break in the heart of town.
5
Sokolski Monastery & Dryanovo Gorge
A short drive from Gabrovo, the Dryanovo Gorge offers scenic hiking, a medieval monastery and dramatic limestone cliffs. The area around Sokolski Monastery is similarly beautiful with forest trails and a tranquil setting. Great for a half-day nature escape.
